The acting General Secretary of the Health Services Workers Union (HSWU), Reynolds Tenkorang has stated that the labour unions will on Wednesday November 5, 2014 embark on demonstration. According to him, the demonstration is aimed at getting government to transfer the tier two pension monies to their fund managers to allow retiring workers
to receive their pensions. 12 Labour unions, including the Health Service Workers Union
(HSWU), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT)
and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) announced a nationwide strike on October 22 to demand that government transfers monies deducted from their salaries for the tier two pensions as mandated under Act 766. Government subsequently sued the unions with
the view of having the court compel the unions to end the strike as well as seek interpretation of the Labour Act. Government has therefore secured an ex parte
application from the court ordering the twelve striking labour unions to return to work. But Reynolds Tenkorang who is the Convenor
for the strike insisted that till government grant what is due them, they will not go back
to work. “We are ready to use all the democratic means to lawfully get what is ours so that we can
enjoy when we go on pension” he noted on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Friday.
